One Stop for all Your Community Addiction and Mental Health Needs
Author: Carolyn Smith, Care Manager, Alberta Health Services
Access 24/7 opened in the spring of 2019 with a vision of creating an accessible entry point for individuals seeking community addiction and mental health services within the Edmonton zone. Access 24/7 is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year! Staffed with Mental Health Therapists, Nurses, Addiction Counsellors, Social Workers, and Peer Support Workers, the team is able to connect quite quickly with individuals who are seeking support or information. The clinician works with the client to address any immediate addiction or mental health needs and to develop a plan to support the individual’s next step in their journey. The clinician has access to other clinical members of our team, such as our Pharmacist or Psychiatrists, if additional consultation is required.
Access 24/7 also provides support to other professionals who need assistance with providing or augmenting services for their clients. Physicians, Primary Care Networks, and staff within other community agencies are able to connect with the team to work collaboratively to address an individual’s needs. Police members from the Edmonton Police Service and RCMP members from the communities surrounding Edmonton are also able to reach out to the team when working with individuals they feel require our support to ensure that these individuals also have an opportunity to receive community supports.
A community working better together will improve the care that its members receive. One step at a time, the Access 24/7 team feels honored to be a part of improving the lives of those who live with addiction or mental health concerns.
